Mexico Elects First Openly Gay Mayor

A northern Mexican city of Fresnillo, located in the state of Zacatecas, has elected Mexico’s first openly gay mayor. In an area known for “cowboy boots, embossed belts and drug gang shootouts”, it seems like an unlikely place for Mayor Benjamin Medrano, a 47-year-old gay bar-owner to tae office. Medrano says his election on July 7, “marks a significant point in the fight for gay rights”.
