President Francois Hollande signed the newly passed and highly controversial marriage equality bill known as “Marriage For All” act into law Saturday morning. The first wedding will most likely take place in the southern city of Montpellier no earlier than May 29th as couples must apply for marriage licenses 10 days before they can have a ceremony.
Right-wing opposition has been fierce in France, with large scale protests that have included violence. Despite the these protests and legal challenges, the President vows to keep the law intact:
“I will ensure that the law applies across the whole territory, in full, and I will not accept any disruption of these marriages,”
France becomes the 15th country world wide to offer full civil marriage equality. The other countries include Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay. Other countries, like the US, allow same-sex marriages in some but not all jurisdictions.

From Sen. Franken’s website:
“I’ve been married to Franni for 37 years and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. As a long-time supporter of marriage equality, I believe that every loving couple-in Minnesota and across the country-should have the same opportunity,” said Sen. Franken.”And now, thanks to courageous-and not to mention, bipartisan-votes by the Minnesota State Legislature and support from Minnesotans statewide, we are the latest state to legalize same-sex marriage. Today I’m proud that Gov. Mark Dayton signed legislation bringing marriage equality to Minnesota. Our country is beginning to understand that it’s not about what a family looks like: it’s about their love and commitment to one another.”
On Tuesday, Governor Mark Dayton signed the law. Wedding will begin this summer. Minnesota becomes the 12th state to legalize same-sex marriage. Marriages are also legal in the Washington D.C.

Today the Minnesota State Senate passed marriage equality. Once signed by Governor Mark Dayton, Minnesota will be the 12th state in the US to offer full civil marriage equality in the United States. The house passed its version of the bill last week.
Passage comes just over six months after Minnesota voters rejected a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
Congratulations Minnesota!!!
