Shockingly, it is still legal in the state of Louisiana to fire someone for being gay. Governor elect Jon Bel Edwards looks to change all of that.
According to The Advocate, “‘The Times Picayune of New Orleans reports that sometime after his inauguration January 11, Edwards will sign an executive order to protect his state’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender state employees and government contractors from getting fired, being discriminated against and harassed.” No time frame for the executive order has been announced but the Times Picayune did note that the bill,”would not protect non government employees, nor would it necessarily apply to state government outside the governor’s control, such as the judiciary.”
This being the South, Edwards already faces opposition to the order as the Louisiana Family Forum has promised to fight the order.

Good old Mark Twain would be a spry 180 years old today and probably still spouting off incredible little chestnuts like the one featured in today’s meme. Twain had a way of cutting through life’s bs like a hot knife and could also be incredibly tender as shown in this meme. We chose this particular quote because a reminder of kindness is always a good thing especially during the holiday season. Twain died in April 1910 but his words and wisdom continue to make us laugh and think.

“I don’t know what to sign!’ a friend of mine recently lamented as a card from a group of us was being passed around. This friend isn’t alone. Most of us tend to freeze up whenever the white envelope gets handed over or left on our desk. Should we be witty? Should we use this space to tell a story about the person? Should we just sign our name and be done with the whole tortuous affair? It shouldn’t be so hard and it doesn’t have to be with Proudly Yours Top 4 Card Signing Tips!
4. Keep it simple: Ever get that card with a person’s life story in it? Yikes. Don’t be that person. Funny and lengthy stories are best shared at happy hour or over coffee with the gang. And long declarations of admiration are maybe not greeting card-appropriate. Instead, keep it simple and to the point. Say, “Happy Birthday” or “All the best” or “We love you and we’ll miss you.” It doesn’t have to be Shakespeare to be special and unique.
3.Don’t be a space hog: We get it. You draw cute pictures or write witty poems but maybe leave some room for other people to sign too? Your message doesn’t have to be bigger or longer to leave an impact. Being conscious of the space left in the card is the polite thing to do.
2.Avoid being redundant: Take a look around elsewhere on the card. If everyone is saying “Good luck! We’ll miss you!” maybe try something else. Something personal like, “I’ll miss our lunches together” or “Hope you love your new job.” An original message shows you actually care and you’re not just going through the card signing motions.
1. Be authentic: When signing a card to someone close or maybe someone you don’t know that well, be yourself. Write whatever it is you want to write but do it from the heart. Even in group cards you can still find the words (and the space) to say something lovely. A great quote, a funny one-liner you and the person share, a short memory are all ways to say you care while making signing the group card less stressful.

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up in a few days, we figured a Monday Meme focused around gratitude was probably a good idea. This one comes from that Texas-born quote factory William Arthur Ward. Ward wrote for dozens of magazines and newspapers and rose to acclaim in the 1950’s. He died in 1994 but lives on in a series of quotes that wind up everywhere and we thought this was a great one considering the season.
Lastly, it’s a nice time to remember what we’re personally grateful for and we’re grateful for you, lovely card buyers!
