Canadian Navy Makes History With Same-Sex Kiss

It’s a long-standing tradition that the first sailor off a ship be met with a kiss by their loved one. Early this week, that tradition got a modern twist when Master Seaman Francis Legare of the Canadian Navy was kissed by his partner Corey Vautour. Their smooch is believed to be the first time the ceremonial kiss was between two men. “I have been away for 255 days, so it feels great,” Legare told CBC. “I am speechless.” The kiss was met with loud cheers, proving the navy has come a long way in accepting LGBT unions. “We are reflective of society and we do recruit across all across society,” Rear Admiral Gilles Couturier, commander of the Pacific Navy, said. “If we don’t adapt, we won’t have any sailors joining.”

millay meme 2

Why its taken us this long to post something by Edna St. Vincent Millay, we’ll never know! After all, the oft-quoted and frequently studied words of Edna St. Vincent Millay are so part of our human dialogue. And yet we rarely speak of the woman herself. Born on this day in 1892, Millay was the third woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923. In her poetry, plays and novels, Millay tackled female sexuality, feminism and anti-war sentiments. While attending Vassar, Millay kept a diary of her relationships with both men and women and remained open about her bisexuality until her death at age 58. Her home, Steepletop, in Austerlitz, New York is now a museum and artists colony. Edna St. Vincent Millay was named one of the 31 icons of LGBT HIstory Month by Equality Forum in 2015. So thank you Edna and happy birthday!

Graham cracker brand Honey Maid wanted love to be celebrated but not just between couples. So this year the company chose Love Day over Valentine’s Day. “This Valentine’s Day, let’s think of love differently,”a new ad begins. In the heartfelt video that follows, love of all kinds- between adopted brothers, a parent and trans child, a lesbian and her grandmother and a gay son and his mom- is celebrated. It’s a powerful video that you’ll want to watch and share. Just make sure there’s a tissue nearby!

As part of Honey Maid’s ongoing “This is Wholesome” campaign, the ad boldly celebrates non-traditional love between families. In 2014, the brand made headlines for featuring a gay couple in a primetime commercial.

Every day should be Love Day! Celebrate the person you love with one of our unique cards!

Myles meme

Our Monday Meme comes from poet Eileen Myles. Thanks in large part to her relationship with Transparent creator Jill Soloway, Myles has experienced a bit of a resurgence as of late.  A  new collection of poems as well as a reissue her coming of age novel Chelsea Girls were published last year by HarperCollins and she has been profiled by major publications. The truth is, however, Myles has been a poetry trailblazer, openly writing about love and sexuality for nearly four decades. As book lovers and lovers of love itself, the sentiment in this quote is something we believe in!
