Coretta Scott King Vs. Alveda King – Who Knew MLK Better?

Unsurprisingly, the virulently anti-gay niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. issued a press release decrying the recent NAACP’s endorsement of full civil marriage equality:
Neither my great-grandfather, an NAACP founder, my grandfather Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. an NAACP leader, my father Rev. A. D. Williams King, nor my uncle Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. embraced the homosexual agenda that the current NAACP is attempting to label as a civil rights agenda. In the 21st Century, the anti-traditional marriage community is in league with the anti-life community, and together with the NAACP and other sympathizers, they are seeking a world where homosexual marriage and abortion will supposedly set the captives free.”
On the other had, Dr. King’s wife, Coretta Scott King had this to say about LGBT rights:
I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
and
Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood. This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group.
and
Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, in Albany, Ga. and St. Augustine, Fla., and many other campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement. Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions.
and
Lesbian and gay people are a permanent part of the American workforce, who currently have no protection from the arbitrary abuse of their rights on the job. For too long, our nation has tolerated the insidious form of discrimination against this group of Americans, who have worked as hard as any group, paid their taxes like everyone else, and yet have been denied equal protection under the law.
I think I’m more inclined to believe the woman who married Dr. King, helped him create a national dialogue about civil rights, helped him take up and lead the civil rights movement in this country, raised his children and buried him after he was assassinated by a white supremacist than the words of a Christian supremacist who has dedicated her life to denying rights to women and LGBT citizens. Just sayin’
Binational Lesbian Couple Given Deportation Reprieve

A legally married gay couple got a break from immigration services.
Japanese immigrant Takako Ueda and her American spouse, Frances Herbert, got word Tuesday that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services decided to defer action on deportation proceedings against Ueda, whose visa had expired.
I can’t help wondering if president Obama’s recent support of marriage equality helped the couple’s cause.
These cases are important. There are over 36,000 binational gay couples in this country, and my husband and I are among them. Michael is here on a student visa, and when he finishes his studies, our future is uncertain. Will DOMA be gone by then and I will be able to sponsor him for a green card, like heterosexual couples can? Will Michael get sponsored for a work visa? Will we be forced to leave our home and move to Canada?
There is a lot of unjust uncertainty for us… It’s time for our country treat all it’s citizens equally. The clock is ticking.

Dan Savage Invites NOM’s Brian Brown to After Dinner Debate

After Dan Savage told high school journalism students, “We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people.” He was challenged to a debate by the head bigot at the National Organization for Marriage, a virulently anti gay group with ties to both the Catholic and Mormon Churches. The New Civil Rights Movement reports that Dan has named the time and place:
“So, what I’d like to do is invite you to dinner. Bring the wife. My husband will be there. I will hire a video crew and we will video sort of an after dinner debate.”
“You have to acknowledge my humanity by accepting my hospitality, and I have to acknowledge your by extending my hospitality to you.”
I love Dan Savage. He is unapologetically honest about what he believes and is never intimidated by the opposition. I can’t wait to see how this goes. I wonder if Brown will accept the offer… It will be hard to spout his hateful lies in the Savage home.

Happy Harvey Milk Day

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay American to be elected to public office. Before he was murdered by former city supervisor, Dan White, Harvey Milk made real changes for LGBT people in San Francisco, California, and across the nation. He said:
Hope will never be silent.
He also encouraged gays to come out. He wisely believed that it is harder to discriminate against someone you know personally. I think he’d be happy in the recent progress we’ve made in the civil rights of LGBT people in this country. Let’s keep up the momentum!
