Obama Ad About LGBT Advances

I heard a small excerpt of an interview Meghan McCain had Tuesday with Michelangelo Signorile‘s radio show.  I have nothing against Ms McCain.  I think she has been a positive voice for LGBT rights in the past and she certainly doesn’t spout the hateful rhetoric that is getting to be standard with so many Republicans.  But something she said really bothered me.  In talking about supporting Romney, she excused his anti-gay stances by saying that not all people are single issue voters.  When asked about Obama’s coming out in favor of marriage equality, she said it was just words and he hasn’t done anything.

I think he’s done a lot.  When you’re treated like a second class citizen, nothing seems like enough until you have full legal equality and you feel safe everyday – that may be a long way off, but no other president has done so much for our community.

I’m not typically a single issue voter, either.  But when one candidate is promising to do whatever they can to grant you equality, and has made many, many steps toward that goal, and the other is v0wing to reverse all those rights and write discrimination into the Constitution… that’s an issue that certainly gets my attention.

Ninth Anniversary of Lawrence v Texas Decision

Nine years ago, today, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Lawrence v. Texas, in effect, decriminalizing gay sex.   At that time it was illegal to engage in “homosexual activity” in 14 states.  Now we are on the verge of another Supreme Court decision that could advance gay rights once again.  Both Proposition 8, the law banning same sex marriage in California, and several cases Challenging the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) have been found unconstitutional in federal courts – and both issues are most likely going to be appealed to the Supreme Court.  Most experts believe that Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the majority opinion in Lawrence, may be the deciding vote.  With 4 conservative leaning judges and 4 liberal leaning judges, Kennedy is seen as the moderate voice on the bench.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if marriage equality was granted throughout the U.S. on the tenth Anniversary of Lawrence v. Texas?  I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I like anniversaries!
