Monday Meme: Wild Thing

Born today in 1914, writer and dancer Jack Dunphy once said, “I never wanted fame.” His lover of more than 3 decades, Truman Capote was quite the opposite. They are pictured here in today’s Monday Meme in Italy where they lived together in the 1950’s. The unlikely pair, Dunphy the quiet introvert and Capote the outspoken, controversial icon, first met in 1948. Although they drifted in and out of one other’s lives the couple remained close until Capote’s death until 1984. Dunphy was named chief beneficiary of Capote’s estate. Dunphy wrote about his relationship with Capote in a book entitled, Dear Genius which was published before his own death in 1992.

Viva the gender revolution! As we evolve so does our idea of gender so thank goodness for ongoing conversations on the topic. Like Lauren Lubin’s new film We Exist: Beyond the Binary which explores life outside the gender binary. Lauren’s work shatters traditional, antiquated constructs that defines gender as either male or female. Lauren identifies as gender neutral and uses they/them/theirs as their pronouns. Lauren says,“One of the most valuable assets that has helped me to fully come into my own is unequivocally education. Education is knowledge and it is such knowledge which has empowered me to understand myself as well as another. Gender identity and expression are two important components of a well-rounded education. I hope to shed light on both the importance and inclusion of having such education throughout the education system and simple ways we can begin to do just that.” The film will step into the spotlight as it kicks off Boulder Pridefest with two exclusive screenings on September 6 in Boulder. Lauren is also an avid runner and athlete. They made headlines in 2015 with their“WE RUN” campaign by becoming the first ever non-binary Marathoner, to come out and openly compete on the international stage in efforts to raise recognition in the sporting world. In November 2016, Lauren will be the first non-binary Marathoner to compete in the coveted New York City Marathon. Lauren is also the founder of New York City’s first non-binary running group, Andro Runners, which is dedicated exclusively to non-binary athletes.

We’re celebrating the Queen herself, who turns 58 tomorrow, with a Monday Meme dedicated to asking for what you want. An LGBT ally and AIDS activist long before it was the cool thing for pop stars to do, Madonna also provided the coming out soundtrack for an entire generation. Far from perfect and at times misguided, Madonna has nevertheless been a vocal ally and big time fundraiser for LGBT causes for several decades. Towleroad came up with 25 of her best LGBT ally moments last year if you need further proof. Happy birthday, Madonna and if you’re looking to say what you want with an amazing card, check out our selection here!

With a massive number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes currently competing in the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the inspiring stories have flooded the internet. Our current favorite? The unique and very Olympics-style engagement of rugby player Isadora Cerullo. As the winners of the first ever women’s sevens finals were announced, Cerullo became the first athlete to accept a marriage proposal at the Games. Per the Independent:
Marjorie Enya, a 28-year-old volunteer manager at the stadium, proposed to her girlfriend, rugby player Isadora Cerullo, in a rousing speech on the pitch met with a round of applause, following the medal ceremony of the inaugural rugby competition.
Ms Cerullo, 25, is a member of the Brazil squad who finished ninth in the tournament after failing to beat Japan.
“The Olympic Games can look like closure for me but it’s starting a new life with someone,” Ms Enya told the BBC.
“As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” she said. “I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it.”
“She is the love of my life.
“I wanted to show people that love wins.”
Ms Cerullo, who has been in a relationship with her fiancé for two years, grew up in the US and holds dual Brazil-US citizenship.
She and Ms Enya moved to Sao Paulo in order for her to focus on making Brazil’s squad for the Rio Games.
The Rio Olympics will also see the first ever same-sex couple compete together. “British hockey players Kate Richardson-Walsh and Helen Richardson-Walsh will be competing in the Olympics for the fourth time this year after helping Great Britain win its first Olympic hockey medal in London in 2012,” according to the Independent.
