Here’s one from the “Ain’t Love Grand?” file. 46 years ago, way before marriage equality was even a conversation, Lewis Duckett and Billy Jones met and fell in love. When Duckett was sent off to fight in Vietnam, the couple kept in contact by sending coded letters nearly every day. Since then the pair adopted a child, became grandparents and last October finally got married. Their wedding and love story is brilliantly profiled by the New York Times. Watch it here!

mishimo memeHappy Monday! Back in the early 20th century nice Japanese authors didn’t write about sex, political change and death. But Yukio Mishima did. Life for this gay provocateur wasn’t easy and he eventually died by ritual suicide at age 45. However, today Japan and the world over has recognized the man’s courage and talent.

Fantastic news came to Presbyterian gay and lesbian couples last Tuesday as members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted to change the definition of marriage in the church’s constitution to include same-sex marriage. According to the New York Times, “The final approval by a majority of the church’s 171 regional bodies, known as presbyteries, enshrines a change recommended last year by the church’s General Assembly. The vote amends the church’s constitution to broaden marriage from being between ‘a man and a woman’ to ‘two people, traditionally a man and a woman.” After 30 years of debate on the church’s stance on homosexuality, leaders in the church like Rev. Brian D. Ellison are thrilled with the decision. “Finally, the church in its constitutional documents fully recognizes that the love of gays and lesbian couples is worth celebrating in the faith community,” Ellison said.

While not all members of the church support the outcome of the vote, LGBT Presbyterians see it as a victory. “Some of us are calling it liberation day,” said the Rev. William Blake Spencer, pastor of Ocean Heights Presbyterian Church in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., who is gay and voted with his presbytery on Tuesday. “It will be the last L.G.B.T.Q. issue that we debate and fight about, and finally our welcome comes without a ‘but’ or an ‘if.’”

“Laughter is the closest distance between two people.” Victor Borge

Nothing brings two people together like sharing a good joke. Science even suggests that laughing can relieve stress, boost the immune system, produce endorphins and improve heart function. Psychologists say that laughter can bond people together while increasing relationship happiness and intimacy. We tend to agree. Our significant others have a ninja-like ability to make us laugh with just a sigh or sly look. They have a solid repertoire of one-liners, puns and facial expression that never fail to crack us up.  Yes, the special person in your life is pretty darn hilarious. For that person we proudly present, “The Closest Distance”, our Card of the Week!

The adorable couple in the front of the card, captured in glorious black and white photography, shares an embrace and a good hearty laugh. Inside features a quote from Victor Borge; “Laughter is the closest distance between two people.” Borge, a Danish comedian, knew a thing or two about the power of laughter. Despite not knowing a lick of English when he moved to America in the 1940’s, Borge quickly became a huge star in the US simply because he knew how to make people laugh. “The Closest Distance” celebrates the comedians in our own lives and the gift of laughter they give us on a regular basis. Like all our cards, “The Closest Distance” can be used for any occasion. Use it as anniversary card, birthday card or just to put a smile on his face. Plus, with February 14th just around the corner, our Card of Week is perfect for the Funny Valentine on your list.

Daniel Radcliffe Gives Coming Coming Out Advice…. Sort of.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter, is straight.  He is also an amazing gay ally.  Recently he was asked to answer young people’s questions on BuzzFeed (see video below).  As the ‘Agony Uncle’, he offered his thoughts on when to start having sex, how to survive a long distance relationship – “Skype” – and infidelity.  One question gave him pause.

One letter read:

‘I’m 21 and gay. My close friends know but I’m terrified about telling my parents. Should I keep it quiet or if I should tell them how’s best to break it to them?

The 25 year old had the perfect answer:  ‘Okay dude. I’m very sorry, this is not a question for me. I cannot give advice on this. I don’t know your parents…I don’t know the situation.

He went on to say that they will probably need to know at some point and that they’ll love him because they are his parents, but he advised talking to people who  “know your parents.”

Coming  out is scary.  Horribly scary.  Even with the most liberal and accepting friends, there is always the fear of rejection or at the least, judgement.  Radcliffe was clear.  I don’t know the situation… it needs to be done, but talk to someone closer.

The more I see of him, the  more I like (and respect) him.

Make sure you see him in his new movie – Horns

Editorial – Time To Let Gay Marriage Ban Go, Utah

An editorial published today in the Salt Lake City Tribune tells the citizens of Utah to let go and let live.  The entire article is worth a read, but here is a snippet:

If Utah’s leaders feel blindsided by those decisions, then they haven’t been paying attention. Same-sex attraction, far from being unnatural, has been around since the dawn of time, and in recent decades mainstream America has come to accept it as something other than deviant. The American Psychiatric Association has considered homosexuality a normal sexual variation, not a mental disorder, since 1973. The Supreme Court in 2003 made same-sex sexual activity legal in every state, and then last June the court took that step of saying same-sex couples have a due-process right to marry.

Younger people by and large take a more libertarian view of same-sex relationships, and that is what has fueled the nation’s shift since Utah passed its ban in 2004.

There are 32 states with laws still in effect banning gay marriage, but only one state has passed such a law since 2006. Since that time seven state legislatures have passed laws to allow same-sex marriage, and three more states did so through popular vote. Court decisions have struck down the laws in another seven states, including Utah. One of those states is California, where state officials stopped defending their same-sex marriage ban when it became obvious where the future lies.

Utah’s ban passed with 66 percent of voters approving it, but it’s a legitimate question whether it would pass today if another election were held. Even the LDS Church has gone from actively participating in the marriage wars to simply explaining its own beliefs and practices.

The tide has turned. It’s time for Utah to turn with it.

Good advice for the 32 states with same sex marriage bans still in place.  Its inevitable… we’ve won…. move on.

Breaking: Same Sex Couples Can File Joint Tax Returns

This just in from my accountant, Tracy!

Married gay couples living in all U.S. states can file joint federal tax returns, even if their local authorities don’t recognize their marriages, the Obama administration said today.

The decision by the Treasury Department implements the Supreme Court’s decision in June to overturn part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which had forbidden the Internal Revenue Service from letting married homosexual couples file jointly.

This is huge!  I can’t wait to hear the screams from the right-wing!
