Monday Meme: Wonder
Renaissance philosopher, politician, author and scientist Sir Francis Bacon was a pretty progressive dude for the 16th Century. Unapologetically gay, Bacon didn’t marry a woman until he was 45 and he remained strong-willed and opinionated until his death in 1626. We figured his words on knowledge and wonder were a perfect match for today’s meme.

Monday Meme: Fans
Smart as a whip and eternally armed with a biting one-liner, Gore Vidal was superstar of American literature as well as a true gay trailblazer. Vidal had no problem telling the likes of Warhol, Norman Mailer, Ronald Reagan and countless others exactly what he thought of them. And yet the guy also had considerable compassion and heart. As fans of both Vidal and love, we think today’s meme illustrates that perfectly!

Monday Meme: Color
Living art world legend and one of the international co-founders of the pop art movement, David Hockney knows a thing or two about living in color. Not only are Hockney’s vibrant and iconic paintings recognized the world over but his outspoken attitude and no-holds-barred opinions are equally as famous. Openly gay, Hockney was tackling queer themes in art at a time when the mere idea made folks uncomfortable. So here’s to you, Mr. Hockney. Thanks for providing the quote and artwork in today’s Monday meme and for teaching us how to live in color.
Monday Meme: Music
Hear that? That’s the sound of Monday in the background. Author E. Annie Proulx, the genius behind both The Shipping News and Brokeback Mountain, provides the prose for today’s meme. And we couldn’t agree more. While we can’t have a swelling orchestra follow us around today, maybe we can rock out to the radio during our drive home or tap our toes while to whatever’s playing at the grocery store. Hope you find time to do the same!

Monday Meme: Dance
Monday. The mere word doesn’t exactly inspire us to dance in the streets, does it? Yet for this week’s Monday Meme, we’re deferring to the wisdom of poet, novelist and playwright Gertrude Stein. After all, the lady knew a thing or two about living life to its fullest. Stein’s brazen style and bold tales of lesbian romance we’re some of the first of their kind back when they caused a publishing sensation in the early 1900’s. Plus, her friendships with the world’s best artists and writers in Paris have gone to inspire generations of creative types searching for “La Boheme.”
Life’s short so we might as well shake our tail feathers while we can!

Raspy-voiced Broadway performer Harvey Fierstein is often cast for comic relief in big-budget Hollywood films. But make no mistake about it, Fierstein is a Tony-winning powerhouse and a highly influential voice in the LGBT community. From Hairspray to Kinky Boots to Torch Song Trilogy and beyond, Fierstein has been part of some of the biggest Broadway hits of the last 30 years. Fierstein also uses his platform to speak out against inequality and writes frankly on LGBT issues. So we thought what better way to kick off the week than words of wisdom from the man himself?
