Voters also elected Derek Kitchen  on Tuesday, who became the second gay member of the Salt Lake City Council. Biskupski was first elected as a lawmaker in Salt Lake back in 1998. On Tuesday, the White House endorsed legislation which would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation. In an interview with the Washington Post, White House press secretary said the Obama administration had reviewed the bill for “several weeks.” He added, “We look forward to working with Congress to ensure that the legislative process produces a result that balances both the bedrock principles of civil rights . . . with the religious liberty that we hold dear in this country.”

The chances of this Congress approving the legislation are slim but the national discussion whether the LGBT community needs greater safeguards is now on the forefront thanks to Obama’s support. Many view the legislation not only as groundbreaking but vital. Chad Griffin explains, “The unfortunate reality is that, while LGBT Americans can legally get married, millions remain at risk of being fired or denied services for who they are or who they love because the majority of states still lack explicit, comprehensive non-discrimination protections.”

Trudeau is Canada’s second youngest prime minister. He’s famous for his progressive politics, being a feminist and a tireless advocate for gay rights. Per The Advocate, Trudeau had this to say about last summer’s monumental Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage:

We’re celebrating 10 years of taking the decision the Supreme Court in the U.S. just took,” Trudeau said during an interview with Canada’s Global News at Toronto Pride this year, shortly after the U.S. marriage equality decision. “It’s a great day for freedom. It’s wonderful to see political leaders, celebrating this.”

Justin Trudeau is the son of late Pierre Trudeau who served as prime minister from 1968 to 1984.

Adoption Ban Lifted By Mexican Supreme Court

Supreme-Court-Mexico-400A landmark decision came from Mexico’s Supreme Court on Tuesday when it issued a 9-1 ruling that a Campeche state law barring same-sex couples from adopting is unconstitutional. Children’s rights were cited by the court as the basis for its decision. “I see no problem for a child to be adopted in a society of co-existence, which has precisely this purpose”, said presiding Judge Luis Maria Aguila in the ruling, “Are we going to prefer to have children in the street, which according to statistics exceed 100,000? We attend, of course, and perhaps with the same intensity or more, to the interests of the child.”

This decision comes on the heels of a recent ruling by Mexico’s Supreme Court which stated that bans on same-sex are unconstitutional. Currently, same-sex marriages are legal in Mexico City as well as the states Chihuahua, Coahuila, Guerrero, and Quintana Roo.

Boy Scouts Votes to Allow Gay Scout Leaders

On Monday, the Boy Scouts of America finally voted to end a decades-long ban on gay scout leaders. The Boy Scouts’ national executive board met in Texas and, according to NBC News, “concluded that the policy of excluding gay adults ‘was no longer legally defensible.’ The decision was approved by 79 percent of the board.”

Effectively immediately, the national ban is gone, however, local scouting units still have the ability to reject gay applicants for leadership positions if hiring them would violate the unit’s religious beliefs. The Boy Scouts stated that it would defend any local scouting group’s “good faith refusal” to admit a scouting leader based upon the group’s religious principles. “For far too long this issue has divided and distracted us,” former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Scouting’s current president, said in a statement. “Now it’s time to unite behind our shared belief in the extraordinary power of Scouting to be a force for good in a community and in the lives of its youth members.

Human rights groups, however, say that the vote is a start but the Boy Scouts still has a way to go. “Today’s vote by the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay, lesbian and bisexual adults to work and volunteer is a welcome step toward erasing a stain on this important organization,” said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin in a statement after the vote. “But including an exemption for troops sponsored by religious organizations undermines and diminishes the historic nature of today’s decision.”

According to Pink News, the country, which has a population of 57,000, voted to adopt Danish legislation on the issue. Two MPs were absent, but none voted against the measure. Greenland will now scrap it’s 1996 domestic partnership laws which were adopted from Denmark.  “The bill to make the changes to bring Greenland in line with Denmark, which legalised same-sex marriage in 2012, was announced in February,” Pink News reports. The tiny country introduced discrimination for LGBT people in 2008 and held its first pride event in 2010.

The new measure will go into effect on 1 October 2015 and also grants adoption rights to same-sex couples.
