kd meme 2

Happy birthday to openly gay chanteuse and Grammy-award winning badass K.D. Lang! Today’s meme sums up Lang’s persona from moment one. After all, she was lesbian chic way before it even existed, was out of the closet before it was cool, collaborated with Tony Bennett before Gaga and was always 100% herself. In short, she’s an inspiration for all us to embrace who were are.

And if you’d like to get a card for the person you love to embrace, you’ve come to the right place!

Happy 70th birthday to Patricia Ireland! The former president of the National Organization of Women, the author of What Women Want and a tireless activist for gays, lesbians and women, Ireland came out as a bisexual in 1991. Pat stirred up more than her share of trouble with her outspoken views on elections, violence against women and inequality. We decided to celebrate this trailblazer with a new Monday Meme! As a leader herself, we thought this quote was appropriate. Happy birthday, Pat and keep giving them hell.

jackie memeLove needs a little a push every now and then and no one knew more about exciting love tales than author Jackie Collins. Collins lost her struggle with cancer yesterday and we thought we’d pay tribute. After all, Collins was writing about gay scandals, lesbian sex and same-sex relationships long before Orange is the New Black hit the airwaves. Brava Jackie, you grand dame of guilty pleasures.

martina meme

What with the US Open happening this holiday weekend, we thought we’d look towards the world of tennis for our Monday Meme and who’s more amazing than Martina Navratilova? In fact, by winning the US Open in 1983, Navratilova created a career Grand Slam and became only the seventh female player to do so. Martina has long been an advocate for LGBT rights and blazed a trail for gay athletes when she came out in the early 1980’s. Plus, the message of her quote is one we wholeheartedly agree with.

Bacon Meme

Renaissance philosopher, politician, author and scientist Sir Francis Bacon was a pretty progressive dude for the 16th Century. Unapologetically gay, Bacon didn’t marry a woman until he was 45 and he remained strong-willed and opinionated until his death in 1626. We figured his words on knowledge and wonder were a perfect match for today’s meme.

vidal final2

Smart as a whip and eternally armed with a biting one-liner, Gore Vidal was superstar of American literature as well as a true gay trailblazer. Vidal had no problem telling the likes of Warhol, Norman Mailer, Ronald Reagan and countless others exactly what he thought of them. And yet the guy also had considerable compassion and heart. As fans of both Vidal and love, we think today’s meme illustrates that perfectly!

hockney memeLiving art world legend and one of the international co-founders of the pop art movement, David Hockney knows a thing or two about living in color. Not only are Hockney’s vibrant and iconic paintings recognized the world over but his outspoken attitude and no-holds-barred opinions are equally as famous. Openly gay, Hockney was tackling queer themes in art at a time when the mere idea made folks uncomfortable. So here’s to you, Mr. Hockney. Thanks for providing the quote and artwork in today’s Monday meme and for teaching us how to live in color.
