mlk meme

Happy MLK Day!

We honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Monday meme featuring one of his most relevant and powerful quotes. While King’s place as a civil rights advocate is rightfully secured, it is his belief in love and human kindness that resonates today. Lots of great tributes, images and articles are floating around the web today including a great homepage by Apple, a little known story about King’s 1958 stabbing from Mashable and an interesting take on MLK and gay marriage from the Advocate. Enjoy!

douglas eyes

Born in Austria-Hungary in 1868, writer Norman Douglas was once described as a “pagan to the core” thanks in part to his scandalous gay relationships and devil-may-care attitude. He wrote several works including multiple travel books, the novel South Wind and a naughty book of limericks which personifies Douglas’ penchant for bawdy humor. Douglas died in 1952 in Capri, Italy the place he loved and served as an inspiration for many of his books.

Our Monday meme uses Douglas’ witty words to ponder friendship. And speaking of friends, hop on over to our card gallery to find the perfect card for one of your friends!

stipe meme

Happy New Year & Happy Monday! Today’s meme comes courtesy of alt-rocker Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Stipe, who turns 56 today, is legendary not just for his impressive music career but for his blunt and outspoken demeanor. Long the subject of “Is he?” or “Isn’t he?” speculation, Stipe has no problem putting gossips in their place when it comes to his personal life. We say good for you. Straight, gay, bi– whatever you are Mr. Stipe, we salute you and happy birthday!

stein memeIn the era of bizarre headlines, terrifying tales from the campaign trail and downright depressing world news, keeping the words of Gertrude Stein in mind sounds like a great idea. Out, proud and take-no-prisoners, Stein is often remembered as the champion of great artists like Cezanne and Hemingway. But her own contributions to the worlds of art and literature are nothing to sneeze at. Stein essentially created queer fiction with Q.E.D. published in 1903 and raised eyebrows until her death at age 72 in 1946.

Raise some eyebrows of your own with our amazing selection of cards! Check them out here.

Although you couldn’t sit down with Oprah and come out of the closet back in Willa Cather’s day, the iconic author didn’t exactly hide her relationships with women either. To this day, scholars quibble over if these relationships were indeed sexual. Nevertheless, Cather and Edith Lewis lived together in series of apartments from 1908 until the author’s death in 1947. Regardless of her sexual orientation, Cather had a unique vision into the human soul and wrote incredible works that stand up today. Today’s meme and the quote provided by Cather touches on her long-running themes of  inner strength and resiliency. cather meme

Twain MemeGood old Mark Twain would be a spry 180 years old today and probably still spouting off incredible little chestnuts like the one featured in today’s meme. Twain had a way of cutting through life’s bs like a hot knife and could also be incredibly tender as shown in this meme. We chose this particular quote because a reminder of kindness is always a good thing especially during the holiday season. Twain died in April 1910 but his words and wisdom continue to make us laugh and think.

ward meme

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up in a few days, we figured a Monday Meme focused around gratitude was probably a good idea. This one comes from that Texas-born quote factory William Arthur Ward. Ward wrote for dozens of magazines and newspapers and rose to acclaim in the 1950’s. He died in 1994 but lives on in a series of quotes that wind up everywhere and we thought this was a great one considering the season.

Lastly, it’s a nice time to remember what we’re personally grateful for and we’re grateful for you, lovely card buyers!

Plastic-army-men

Today’s quote comes to us by openly gay author Tom Spanbauer. Spanbauer’s novels like Now is the Hour and The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon are modern classics that explore love, race and sexuality with humor and prose. Spanbauer doesn’t shy away from difficult topics in his books and has been incredibly open about his own personal struggles. So it’s due to this bravery, humor and talent we honor Tom Spanbauer with a Monday Meme! We happen to think this quote embodies the right kind of attitude to have on a Monday morning.

sexton memeHad she lived, poet Anne Sexton would be 87 today. Written off early in the game as the ultimate bored housewife, Sexton proved to be an influential poet who has inspired everyone from Peter Gabriel, Morrissey and beyond. Sexton’s work’s were confessional and talked about things poets just didn’t say at the time. Her own battles with mental illness, drug addiction, abortion, adultery–nothing was off-limits. Though she committed suicide at just age 45, Sexton was able to create beauty out of a few simple words.  And today’s meme illustrates that perfectly!
