Happy Monday! On this date in 1985, painter Marc Chagall died at the ripe old age of 97. Chagall was the oldest of nine children in his Jewish Lithuanian family. At that time in Russia, Jewish children were not allowed to attend regular Russian schools and universities so Chagall attended a small private drawing school. Not a fan of the traditional portrait style popular at the time, Chagall struck out on his own. His long, storied career is a triumph in vision and individuality. Chagall works can be seen on permanent display at the Metropolitan Opera, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Opera de Paris and in Tudeley in Kent, England which houses the world’s only complete set of Chagall stained glass windows. Chagall’s words in today’s meme challenge us to work from the heart and we can’t think of a better way to start our week!

Comedian, actress, talk show host and activist Rosie O’Donnell turns 54 today! O’Donnell holds the distinction of being television’s first openly gay talk show host (beating Ellen DeGeneres by just a few months). Thanks to her openness on her daytime talk show, O’Donnell opened up a national conversation about gay parents and adoption. Ever the trendsetter, Rosie also called out a certain presidential hopeful on his shady personality way back in 2006. Never dull, sometimes controversial and always entertaining Rosie O’Donnell deserves her place among other LGBT icons. Happy birthday, Ro!

Born today in 1879, Einstein’s playful spirit and brilliant thoughts live on, thanks largely in part to the internet. Revel in his legacy today by reading some of his most famous quotes, learning about his childhood or send one of our cards to someone you know who isn’t crazy about birthdays.

Why its taken us this long to post something by Edna St. Vincent Millay, we’ll never know! After all, the oft-quoted and frequently studied words of Edna St. Vincent Millay are so part of our human dialogue. And yet we rarely speak of the woman herself. Born on this day in 1892, Millay was the third woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923. In her poetry, plays and novels, Millay tackled female sexuality, feminism and anti-war sentiments. While attending Vassar, Millay kept a diary of her relationships with both men and women and remained open about her bisexuality until her death at age 58. Her home, Steepletop, in Austerlitz, New York is now a museum and artists colony. Edna St. Vincent Millay was named one of the 31 icons of LGBT HIstory Month by Equality Forum in 2015. So thank you Edna and happy birthday!

Our Monday Meme comes from poet Eileen Myles. Thanks in large part to her relationship with Transparent creator Jill Soloway, Myles has experienced a bit of a resurgence as of late. A new collection of poems as well as a reissue her coming of age novel Chelsea Girls were published last year by HarperCollins and she has been profiled by major publications. The truth is, however, Myles has been a poetry trailblazer, openly writing about love and sexuality for nearly four decades. As book lovers and lovers of love itself, the sentiment in this quote is something we believe in!

Today’s meme comes from feminist author Kate Chopin. Born on this day in 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri, Kate Chopin started writing to help lift herself out of a deep depression after the deaths of both her mother and husband. Chopin published hundreds of short stories before the release of her novel the Awakening in 1899. Shunned at the time because of its themes of sexual independence and marital infidelity, The Awakening was rediscovered in the 1960s and has been regarded as a classic of feminist literature ever since. Authors like Sylvia Plath and Edith Wharton were cited Chopin as an influence and the author who never made much money writing is now studied and discussed in literature classes around the globe. Soar, indeed.

Monday Meme: Langston Hughes
Born today in 1902, Langston Hughes was poet, playwright and novelist. Hughes was also a godfather of the Harlem renaissance as well as a nurturing force among other black writers like Alice Walker. Works like Montage of a Dream Deferred, The Weary Blues and Mule Bone were born in the jazz era yet remain well-studied and performed classics today. Hughes’ sexuality has been debated by many a biographer for decades but his contributions to literature and social activism stand on their own. We honor him as well as Black History Month with today’s meme!

Born on this day in 1882, author Virginia Woolf left behind a legacy of words, stories and ideas which have inspired generations of writers as well as an Academy Award winning performance by Nicole Kidman. Through works like A Room of One’s Own and Mrs. Dalloway, she conquered topics and themes light years ahead of her time especially for a female writer. Woolf suffered from a lifelong battle with mental illness and committed suicide in 1941 at the age of 59. Today, she is remembered as a feminist and lesbian icon whose words continue to make us think, like the ones in today’s Monday Meme.
