madonna meme

We’re celebrating the Queen herself, who turns 58 tomorrow, with a Monday Meme dedicated to asking for what you want. An LGBT ally and AIDS activist long before it was the cool thing for pop stars to do, Madonna also provided the coming out soundtrack for an entire generation. Far from perfect and at times misguided, Madonna has nevertheless been a vocal ally and big time fundraiser for LGBT causes for several decades. Towleroad came up with 25 of her best LGBT ally moments last year if you need further proof.  Happy birthday, Madonna and if you’re looking to say what you want with an amazing card, check out our selection here!

franzesephillipsYou just never know what will happen at your local Starbucks. Actor Daniel Franzese popped the question to his longtime boyfriend this week at the North Hollywood branch of the mega-coffee chain where the pair met.  Franzese, known best for his role as Damian in the 2004’s Mean Girls and more recently on HBO’s Looking, recently proposed to his partner Joseph Bradley Phillips. Here’s People with the full scoop on the adorable proposal.

The actor, 38, popped the question at a Starbucks in North Hollywood where the couple – who have been together for more than a year – met for the first time. When they arrived at the coffee chain, Franzese slipped the ring to one of the baristas, whom he had spoken to the day before about the proposal plan. And as the barista called out the pair’s coffee orders, she referred to them as “Mr. & Mr. Franzese” – and handed Phillips a different order, saying it was a new drink he should try.Once Phillips opened the cup with the ring inside, Franzese got down on one knee and said to him: “Since I first saw you here, you have opened your heart to me, and I vow to God that for the rest of my life to honor and protect that heart if you will be my husband. Will you marry me?” the Looking star told his future husband. Phillips, who’s in fashion marketing, will take Franzese’s last name, his rep confirms.”Joseph has given me the best of his heart and I’m so happy he said yes,” Franzese tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Finding my soulmate has made all the years I struggled with myself worth it.” He added, “We can’t wait to be Mr. & Mr. Franzese.”

Congrats to the happy couple!

Splash-Mountain2

Sometimes a family trip to the amusement park can be really special and in the case of 16-year-old Gina sometimes that trip can become a global sensation. Gina visited Disneyland in California earlier this summer. Before their trip, Gina created a rainbow-colored sign which read, “I’m Gay!” and smuggled it into the theme park. She held the sign until the perfect moment and that moment came when the duo was riding Splash Mountain. As the log ride plunged to its watery finale, Gina held up her sign to be captured by cameras. Mom got the message as they perused the souvenir shop monitors. Posting the photo on Twitter, she wrote: “this is how I came out yesterday lolol”. The post now has nearly 10,000 likes.

In an interview with Huffington Post, Gina said, “I couldn’t have ever asked for a better response from my family. I’m truly so lucky to have such amazing support from all of my friends and family. It made this process go much smoother than I could’ve ever imagined!” She told others in the closet: “It’s an overwhelming process, so just make sure you’re comfortable with who you are and make sure you’re prepared for questions or reactions people may have. I also know it’s sometimes hard to tell if you’re ready or not, so just be sure to give yourself time to really think about if you’re prepared.” Gina told Buzzfeed the reaction to her photo has been “amazing but overwhelming.” “I never expected it to blow up like this,” she said. “This Twitter account was just my spam account where I posted random fangirl stuff but I decided it couldn’t hurt to post it and the result was absolutely amazing.”
She said she has been very touched at all the nice comments she has received. “People have responded saying I’ve inspired them to do the same thing, which I think is the coolest part of it all,” she said.

Skittles, the candy famous for inviting us to “taste the rainbow”, has temporarily lost its color. This weekend, the brand is handing out black and white packages of its formerly Technicolor candy. In a clever online commercial, the company says, “You have the rainbow … we have the rainbow … and usually that’s just hunky-dory. But this Pride, only one rainbow deserves to be the centre of attention – yours. And we’re not going to be the ones to steal your rainbow thunder, no siree. That’s why this weekend, we’re giving up our rainbow.” In the spirit of letting Pride’s rainbow shine, a colourless Skittles float will “join in the Pride in London parade on Saturday and Skittles will be giving out monochrome packets along the route,” according to Creative Review. “Ads will also be displayed on outdoor sites along the parade route and a social media campaign will run online using the hashtag #onerainbow, with an animated version of the ad created for Facebook and Twitter.”

What a delicious and inventive way for a brand to celebrate Pride!

ginsburg moonlight

An LGBT icon, a literary powerhouse and a vital part of the Beat poet movement, Allen Ginsburg was an American original. His legacy of bold thoughts and wonderful words make him a natural pick for today’s Monday Meme. Most famous for his epic poem “Howl”, he also wrote articles, short stories and songs. Ginsburg was out and proud way before it was considered fashionable and he lived with his partner Peter Orlovsky from 1954 until his death.  The poet is once again making headlines as a reissued recording of his spoken words is set to be released this May. The album, The Last Word on First Blues, recorded in the 1980’s, features all-star talent like Bob Dylan.  According to Omnivore recordings, the label releasing the album, “The release includes a full color 28-page booklet of rare photos, writings and drawings from Ginsberg’s archives and an essay from set producer Pat Thomas featuring interviews with original participants. Longtime Ginsberg-music aficionado Thomas was given full access to the poet’s tape archive at Stanford University and spent several years pouring over hundreds of hours of recordings.” So here’s to Ginsburg, a godfather of gay rights and champion of self-expression. Now get out there and make Monday howl!

rosie meme

Comedian, actress, talk show host and activist Rosie O’Donnell turns 54 today! O’Donnell holds the distinction of being television’s first openly gay talk show host (beating Ellen DeGeneres by just a few months). Thanks to her openness on her daytime talk show, O’Donnell opened up a national conversation about gay parents and adoption. Ever the trendsetter, Rosie also called out a certain presidential hopeful on his shady personality way back in 2006. Never dull, sometimes controversial and always entertaining Rosie O’Donnell deserves her place among other LGBT icons. Happy birthday, Ro!

A story from the “People Need To Calm Down File”: a Russian prosecutor is “investigating whether media coverage of the unlikely friendship between a male goat and a male tiger could spark interest among children in ‘non-traditional sexual relations,'” according to Time magazine. Last November, Amur the tiger and Timur the goat were introduced at a wildlife park near Vladivostok. The goat was supposed to be a meal for the tiger but instead the pair became friends and their unconventional relationship went viral. Now, Alexei Krestyanov, a lawyer with seemingly nothing else to do, claims the relationship could be harmful to children. “I think the positive coverage of this topic is nothing less than interference in the personal lives of minors, which is what hidden propaganda is, and public, active imposition of homosexuality,” Krestyanov wrote on Facebook. Sigh. Unfortunately, Timur and Amur are currently undergoing a trial separation after they attacked one another. Here’s hoping these two crazy kids can work it out!
