Brian Burke Interviewed Regarding Gay Athletes

Brain Burke, the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, gives a great interview about homophobia in sports. His son, Brendan, who was gay, was killed in a car accident. Burke’s other son, Patrick, has spearheaded the You Can Play campaign as part of Brendan’s legacy. The video campaign features hockey players telling young gay players that if they can play, they can play – the goal is to keep gay players from dropping out of team sports.
One quote I like is “Much of what gay athletes experience is habitual, not hateful,” and that education and culture change can make a huge difference.
The interview is long, 25 minutes, but well worth it.
Several Medical Associations File Brief in Favor of DOMA Challenge

The American Psychological Association, the California Psychological Association, The American Psychiatric Association, The National Association of Social Workers and its CA chapter), The American Medical Association, The American Acedemy of Pediatrics, and the American Psychoanalytic Association filed a “friend of the court” brief today in the case Golinski v. Office of Personnel Management. This is one of two cases that referred to the Supreme Court by the Department of Justice. This case involves providing federal benefits for same-sex partners.
You can read a few excerpts over at Towle Road and the entire brief here. But I wanted to include the conclusion here, because I think it is a beautiful summary of what DOMA is:
“The foregoing shows that the attitudes towards and beliefs about lesbians and gay men relied on by Congress in enacting DOMA – about their capacity for committed, long lasting relationships, and their ability to raise healthy well-adjusted children – are contradicted by the scientific evidence and instead reflect an unreasoned antipathy towards an identifiable minority. Amici accordingly support the judgment of Judge White that § 3 of DOMA appears to be based on an explicit animus against gay men and lesbians. In institutionalizing greater access by heterosexuals than gay men and lesbians to the many federal resources and benefits accorded married couples and their children, the Act conveys the federal government’s judgment that committed intimate relationships between people of the same sex – even when recognized as legal marriages by the couple’s state – are inferior to heterosexual relationships.”
Yeah, what they said!
Episcopalians to Bless Same Sex Couples

The Episcopalian Church has approved an official liturgy blessing the unions of gay couples. The vote, which puts the church well ahead of other denominations on the rights of the LGBT community was held at the church’s triennial General Convention in Indianapolis, IN. “It’s making a statement about the continued presence of gay and lesbian people among the congregations of the Episcopal Church, and that their lives need to be marked by liturgy as well” around to stay — this is not a passing fad,’ ” said Mary A. Tolbert, founding director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry at Pacific School of Religion, in Berkeley, California.
It’s nice to see some religions looking forward and giving its blessing to the inevitable.

From Matt Baum: All eyes are on the Supreme Court, with a big marriage showdown shaping up on the horizon. Two county clerks in Illinois have won right to defend the state’s marriage ban. And equality gets a thumbs up from Methodists, and a thumbs down — for now — from Presbyterians.

Vikings Punter, Chris Kluwe, has recorded a second ad asking Minnesotans to reject the ballot measure that would create a constitutional amendment to discriminate against same sex couples. The first ad is below.
Kluwe has been a strong voice in the opposition of the amendment, which will be voted on this November. Besides supporting marriage equality, he also supports openly gay players in the NFL. Read his interview from Outsports here.
I hope more athletes and public figures who support equality come forward and make their voices heard. These people’s views matter a lot to their fans. The more people hear from those in the lime light, the more attitudes will change, and we will have equality sooner.
Some Retailers Courting Gay Buying Power

Recently, gay themed advertisements have been cropping up. J.C. Penney’s has hired open lesbian Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson, and featured two dads and their kids in a Father’s Day ad. Target started selling same sex wedding cards (Hello!) in June and sold out of their gay pride shirts (I got mine!) Corporations made statements celebrating gay pride this year.
It seems that retailers are willing to go out on a limb to get our business. That, and maybe they don’t see it as all that risky. The majority of Americans, if not pro gay, are indifferent. Of course, the religious right is in an uproar and threatening new boycotts every week. Maybe the gay buying power is worth it. One estimate puts the average income of gays double that of average Americans.
I wonder if we are going to see gay couples in television commercials soon? If we do, it would be so fun to be sitting with a right-wing bigot… I’ve always wanted to watch someones head explode!
