Times are changing.  I have seen some comments like “It is disgusting that we have to ask for the obvious” and I agree.  But if we get mired in the negative about what should be versus what is, we lose our momentum.  I have no doubts that as a country we will look back at the struggles of LGBT rights and wonder how discrimination was tolerated for so long.  I also know we will have a list of heroes and villains much like those of other civil rights struggles… but in the end, we will have our equality, and that is all that matters.

TOP US Marine – Openly Gay Service Members Not A Problem

Commandant Gen. James Amos told the Washington Blade that there have been no issues following the repeal of the discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell law last year.  “I don’t think there is a problem, I don’t see it.  I don’t hear it”

Remember how the anti gay bigots foretold of horrific consequences?  Once again, allowing people to be themselves has had no impact on anyone but them.

I wonder when the world will stop listening to these people the way they did with racists?

Baltimore Sun Calls Out the Lies of Antigay Arguments

The Baltimore Sun published a great opinion peace that spells out the lies, misinformation and scare tactics anti gay opponents have used forever.  This is great that their lies are being exposed.

“The opponents are resorting to spurious arguments to convince voters that the law will somehow be unfair to those with objections to gay marriages because they don’t want to face the real question of fairness at stake. Should the law treat people differently because of their sexual orientation? Or should everyone be treated equally? Maryland’s gay marriage ordinance doesn’t require anyone to violate their religious beliefs or personal conscience. As much as we hope the debate over this issue will persuade everyone in the state of the value of acceptance and tolerance, the law doesn’t force anyone to change the way they think. All it does is to remove a major vestige of discrimination from state law, and that is something all Marylanders should be able to support.”

It’s a great article… check it out here.

Proposition 8 Plaintiffs Ask Supreme Court to Not Hear Case

The Plaintiffs in the case against Proposition 8, the law prohibiting same sex marriage in California, have filed a brief withthe Supreme Court asking them to not hear the case, according to the Advocate.  Lower courts have ruled that the law is unconstitutional as it is based on “animus” (or prejudiced and often spiteful or malevolent ill will)  towards gays.  If the Supreme Court declines to hear the case, the lower courts decisions stand, and the law will be reversed, making same sex marriages legal in California.

In part the brief states, “”The Ninth Circuit found that eliminating the ability of gay and lesbian couples to have their relationships designated as marriages — and relegating them to separate and unequal domestic partnerships — achieves nothing except the marginalization of gay and lesbian individuals and their relationships, and therefore cannot withstand constitutional scrutiny.”  The brief was written by ” plaintiffs’ attorneys Theodore B. Olson and David Boies, who famously argued against each other in the Bush v. Gore case in 2000.

A review of the case so far can be found here.

HRC Video Featuring GOP Supporter of Marriage Equality

It is so nice to be able to post a GOP supporter of marriage equality.  Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders is for marriage, period.  These types of messages from the Republican Party are too rare.  Especially when you consider the new draft of their platform, fresh off the presses for the national committee meeting this month.  Among other extreme measures, the party officially wants:

  • Only appoint  Judges who are against marriage equality to be appointed and that support for marriage equality should disqualify them from the bench.
  • A constitutional amendment banning marriage equality.
  • Reinstatement of DADT.
  • All previous LGBT marriages performed to be dissolved and declared illegal.
  • Repeal of the DC marriage equality law.
  • The Republican Party Platform is now officially against civil unions.
  • A constitutional amendment banning abortion including no exemptions for rape or incest.

I have never agreed with GOP policies, but I could often respect their opnions.  But as they move farther to the right and are beholden to radical hate-groups and Chrisitanists, I find even mild respect for the party impossible.
