According to the New York Times, Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert was fined $75,000 for using the slur ‘no homo’ during a press conference following a win against the Miami Heat. Hibbert apologized saying his words were,

“They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views,” Hibbert said in the statement. “I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night.”

Pacers coach, Frank Vogel weighed in saying, ““Obviously, he made a great mistake. he feels horribly about it. I told him, basically, that we’ve got to move on from it.”

I’m glad to see the NBA acting so quickly. It is also refreshing to hear Hibbert’s apology sound genuine. I think we are making real progress!

Straight Mormon Allies To March in Utah Pride Parade 2013

Straight allies of gays and lesbians are not rare, but those associated with an infamously anti-gay church are.  Last year, over 300 straight Mormons marched in Utah’s pride parade in support of the LGBT community.  Many feared backlash from the Church – even a possibility of excommunication – but the church took no stance on their involvement.  Recently, the Mormon Church has issued statements that, while not accepting gay “behavior”,  have acknowledged that being gay is not a sin.

Change in large institutions is hard.  I hope the church, with its influence and resources, will continue to ‘evolve’ on their positions and one day accept gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered families into their community without conditions.

It could happen…. They decided blacks could go to heaven as recently as 1978!

Boy Scouts to Allow Gay Youth; Gay Leaders Still Banned

Last week the Boy Scouts of America voted to end their century old ban on allowing gay youths into the organization.  Amid loud cries from the extreme right, openly gay youths can now participate in all scouting activities …. until they’re 18.  The ban on gay scout leaders will remain.

Although I am glad they are welcoming gay youth, I am curious about the message they are sending.  It seems being gay is fine until you reach adulthood, then you become a social pariah that should be feared and kept away from children.  Really?

I can only imagine they have listened to the lies and distortions put forward by evangelical christian hate groups like the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.  Bryan Fischer, the “christian” radio host of the American Family association suggests the BSA change its name to “Boy Sodomizers of America”.  Jesus would be so proud.

All changes toward equality are good, but I can’t imagine a gay scout would truly feel welcome in such an environment.  I am so glad my own son found scouting to be a waste of time (much as I did when I was in grade school) so I really didn’t have to be involved as a parent.

Here’s hoping they will reflect on the message they are sending and open their doors to everyone in the near future.  In the meantime, I would hope parents would think hard before allowing their kids to be part of a half-inclusive organization.

When Robbie Rogers came out last February, he decided to “step away” from major league soccer,  believing he could not be himself on the team.  That all changed last week when it was announced he would sign with the LA Galaxy.  He made his debut appearance with the team Sunday night, becoming the first openly gay male athlete to compete in a major North American sport.

“It was really perfect,” Rogers said. “We won, which is most important. My family was here, my friends. My grandparents. I’ve kind of been on this huge journey trying to figure out my life. And now I’m back here. I think kind of where I’m supposed to be.”

Congratulations to a very brave young man.  Coming out can be very hard, but coming out in the public spotlight is above and beyond.
