“True Colors” as You’ve Never Heard It

This video from a very talented group of kindergartners celebrates diversity and acceptance.  The right has long argued that the gay agenda would be forced on our children.  If by gay agenda they mean accepting people for who they are and showing love?  You bet.

Get a tissue!

From the YouTube video description:

Mr. Arturo Avina’s class from LAUSD’s Olympic Primary Center use ASL (American Sign Language) to perform Cyndi Lauper’s classic anthem “True Colors” as they leave kindergarten to go on to 1st grade (and beyond). As they sing, the audience literally “reflects” on the statements “You Are Good” and “You Are Perfect.” The lesson learned: love yourself, and always show love, kindness, and respect to others no matter who they are. Regardless of ethnicity, sex, gender, religious creed, or sexual orientation, EVERYONE is worthy of love.

Jason Collins Marches in Boston Pride

Gay NBA player Jason Collins marched in Boston’s Pride Parade yesterday.  According to Sports Illustrated, Collins, who came out as gay in April, made a promise in that initial interview.  Speaking of his former roommate, Joe Kennedy, Collins reflected that when he’s heard Joe had marched int he Boston Pride Parade in 2012, he had been jealous.  “was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn’t even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator” for fear of being outed.  But things changed after the Boston Marathon bombing.  Collins said:

Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully? When I told Joe a few weeks ago that I was gay, he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him in 2013. We’ll be marching on June 8.

And march he did.

So many have questioned why this is “news”.  It’s news because it hasn’t been done before.  Many people seem to think that living openly is no big deal.  Even for gay folks that are not famous, being out carries huge risks of discrimination, intolerance and often times violence.  Each person of notoriety that comes out, lives proud and sets an example brings us closer to acceptance and equal treatment in this country and around the world.

High School’s Cutest Couple Goes to Dylan and Brad

Last week, Chelsea, a high school student, posted the above picture on her Tumblr blog with the caption:

“Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class. First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school.”

The post quickly went viral, being shared over 100,000 times in 24 hours.  The Huffington Post contact the handsome couple and got this response:

This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us because we have been raised to believe that love is love. We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal … When we started dating a year [ago], the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community.

This just shows how fast and far young people in this country have come.  Not long ago a couple like Brad and Dylan would be bullied and ostracized in nearly every high school in America.  There are still so many schools where this would not be possible, but with each year, they are dwindling.

I look forward to a world where this new generation sets the tone for the entire country.  As the the Brad and Dylan said, “love is love.”  To which I say “Duh!”

Joe Namath on Homophobia in Sports: Get Over It

Joe Namath

Former football great, Joe Namath, says he didn’t know of any gay athletes when he played, but his advice to current players to have a problem with gays in sports?  “I hope they can get over it, because its real.”

Well said – gays exist, and as more people accept that fact, the more of us will come out and live our lives fully and honestly.  The momentum is growing – so we hope you can get over it, because we’re real!

“Portia and I have been married for 4 years and they have been the happiest of my life. And in those 4 years, I don’t think we hurt anyone else’s marriage. I asked all of my neighbors and they say they’re fine.”

Young Republican Voters Don’t Connect with the GOP

A new study released yesterday points out the young voters don’t connect with the GOP. The College Republican National Committee used polling and focus groups to look at what went wrong in 2012 regarding reaching young voters.

The study follows another conducted in March by the Republican National Committee – and the findings are similar – the party is out of touch with many voters.

Some of the areas pointed out in the study as reported by Politco include:

  • Gay marriage: “On the ‘open-minded’ issue … [w]e will face serious difficulty so long as the issue of gay marriage remains on the table.”
  • Hispanics: “Latino voters … tend to think the GOP couldn’t care less about them.”
  • Perception of the party’s economic stance: “We’ve become the party that will pat you on your back when you make it, but won’t offer you a hand to help you get there.”
  • Big reason for the image problem: The “outrageous statements made by errant Republican voices.”
  • Words that up-for-grabs voters associate with the GOP: “The responses were brutal: closed-minded, racist, rigid, old-fashioned.”

The report goes on to suggest some changes, but they seem rather minor.   In regard to gay marriage, the study suggests, “In the short-term, the party ought to promote the diversity of thought within its ranks and make clear that we welcome healthy debate on the policy topic at hand.”  It would have been refreshing if they had suggested many GOP talking heads stop quoting outdated or discredited studies or hide behind a religious ideology and not address a civil rights issue.  The report authors do state that they refrained from offering specific policy suggestions, leaving those up to elected officials.

On the whole, this is just another example of how the far right has hijacked the party and, if it doesn’t make serious changes, has headed it toward extinction.  I
