Jonathan Allen’s parents kicked him out of his house on his 18th birthday because he was gay.  The gifted singer, now 20, recently went on America’s Got Talent.  ‘I haven’t seen my parents in about two and a half years. I love them with all my heart. I don’t know if they still love me. It’s been difficult and music is what makes me feel like I belong.’

After his performance that wowed the judges, Howie Mandel said, ‘‘Your own family disowned you, but with your talent, this show has become your family, and we’d like to say “welcome home”’

Watch his beautiful rendition of “Time to Say Goodbye”.

Marco Rubio Thinks It Should Be Legal to Fire Gays

The GOP golden boy and thirst quenching senator from Florida tells Think Progress he’s ok with people being fired for being gay.  During an interview after a Faith and Freedom luncheon today, TP’s Scott Keyes asked if the senator Supported the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA) that should be introduced later this summer.  The Act would make workplace discrimination illegal across the country.  Currently, 29 states do not have protections for gay, lesbian and bisexual employees, and 34 states do not have protections for transgendered workers.  ENDA would enforce a federal standard across all 50 states.

Senator Rubio responded that he has yet to read the legislation and that, “By and large I think all Americans should be protected but I’m not for any special protections based on orientation.”

Well Mr. Rubio, I like what Julian Bond, former NAACP chairman says on the subject:

“Gay and lesbian rights are not “special rights” in any way. It isn’t “special” to be free from discrimination – it is an ordinary, universal entitlement of citizenship. The right not to be discriminated against is a common-place claim we can expect to enjoy under our laws and our founding document, the Constitution. That many had to struggle to gain these rights makes them precious – it does not make them special, and it does not reserve them only for me or restrict them from others.”

Mr. Rubio should stop pandering to the ultra conservatives – they are fighting a losing battle, and with each passing month, as poll after poll show support for LGBT rights growing, he and his ilk will stand out as the bigots they are.

“Let’s Get Zesty” Ad

One Million Moms is all a twitter of the above ad featured in People magazine.  Fanning themselves and swooning, they posted the following:

“Last week’s issue of People Magazine had the most disgusting ad on the inside front cover that we have ever seen Kraft produce. A full 2-page ad features a n*ked man lying on a picnic blanket with only a small portion of the blanket barely covering his g*nitals. It is easy to see what the ad is really selling. A person has to look closely to see the item the company is marketing because the salad dressing bottle is so small next to the male model, picnic basket and other food items.”

Bring me my smelling salts!  It is true the man is nearly n*aked (and frankly, if I looked like him I would never wear clothes) and the salad dressing IS pretty small, but hey moms, size doesn’t matter, right?  At least that’s what One Million Husbands say.

It’s true, there has always been a lot of flesh in advertising… like this:

Video: Missing Husband: How Couples are Split Apart by DOMA

missing husband

Watch this heart wrenching video – David and Jason and Jason are legally married, but as a binational gay couple, they cannot get a green card for Jason.  DOMA has forced them to be separated for months at a time 17 times since they met.  A straight couple would never have to endure this pain.

Here’s hoping the Supreme Court strikes down this unconstitutional law this month.  My husband, Michael and I face the same fate if DOMA stands.  Read more about DOMA here, here and here.

The SCOTUS DOMA Decision – What It Means

0311-Front

A Supreme Court decision on the constitutionality of section 3 of the The Defense of Marriage will be revealed this month.  Gay couples and allies wait for the verdict – one that would provide over 1100 rights to same sex couples. Murray Lipp offers a great overview in Huffington Post Gay Voices blog.  He gives a good overview of the history of the law and Eddie Windsor’s case against it (For more information on that, see my DOMA Digest).

I particularly liked his list of five ways in what he calls  “DOMA’s destructive impact.  He offers a great description of the negative impact DOMA creates and what would be gained if DOMA section 3 is repealed.  In brief they are:

  1. Immigration (this one strikes close to home as my husband is Canadian and here on a student visa – when that expires, if DOMA is still in effect, we need to leave the US)
  2. Social Security and Medicare
  3. Federal Taxes
  4. Family Medical Leave
  5. Military Benefits

Except for number 5, these impact ALL married couples –  Our fingers are crossed as we wait for word from the high court.  In the meantime, please share this post with others so people begin to realize what the ramifications of discriminatory laws have on their gay friends and family.  It is clear from recent polling that many straight (and some gay) Americans don’t really understand what DOMA is and how it impacts the lives of married gay couples in our country.  The more people know, the more minds change, the closer to equality as a nation we become.
