The dude-centric world of sports still might have a long way to go in accepting LGBT athletes but there has certainly been progress this year. Like this new campaign from the New York Giants. In partnership with the You Can Play Project-an organization which protects the rights of LGBT athletes and sports professionals, the video features six Giants players including Victor Cruz and Prince Amukamara. Per the New York Daily News:

“You Can Play is proud to receive the Giants’ tremendous show of support,” said Wade Davis, the organization’s executive director and a former NFL player. “The entire Giants organization has committed to inclusion for all, including LGBT athletes and fans. The vocal support of alumni like Harry Carson, the Giants’ front office staff, and current players sends a giant message to all sports fans, especially young fans everywhere. We are thrilled that the Giants are leading the charge in the NFL for LGBT inclusion.”

Way to Giants! Here’s hoping other teams follow your lead.

Olympic freeskier and X Games star Gus Kenworthy became the first openly gay action sports athlete when he came out of the closet in a new interview with ESPN magazine this week. 9077656_G

With a slew of athletes from a variety of sports coming out over the last year or two, Kenworthy is the first of his field to come out as openly gay. In addition to winning 3 AFP World Championship titles, Kenworthy won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Given the culture of his sport, Kenworthy says the decision to come out was not an easy one. Per ESPN:

“They say it’s a community of individuals and everyone is doing their own thing and it’s not a team sport, so you get to be yourself,” Kenworthy says. “But you don’t, really.” Unlike team sports, athletes never leave the locker room.
They turn pro as children and become immediately indoctrinated by the culture. “Between the contests and the shoots, everyone’s always skiing and training together,” Kenworthy says. “But it is the same, it’s totally like that: Be creative, be yourself, be all this stuff, but also literally just be everybody else.”

Kenworthy, despite professionally being in the closet, says he knew he was gay from about age 5. Now he’s determined to serve as a role model for other gay athletes and continue his stellar career. “I want to be the guy who comes out, wins s— and is like, I’m taking names,” he says.

Trudeau is Canada’s second youngest prime minister. He’s famous for his progressive politics, being a feminist and a tireless advocate for gay rights. Per The Advocate, Trudeau had this to say about last summer’s monumental Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage:

We’re celebrating 10 years of taking the decision the Supreme Court in the U.S. just took,” Trudeau said during an interview with Canada’s Global News at Toronto Pride this year, shortly after the U.S. marriage equality decision. “It’s a great day for freedom. It’s wonderful to see political leaders, celebrating this.”

Justin Trudeau is the son of late Pierre Trudeau who served as prime minister from 1968 to 1984.

Happy 70th birthday to Patricia Ireland! The former president of the National Organization of Women, the author of What Women Want and a tireless activist for gays, lesbians and women, Ireland came out as a bisexual in 1991. Pat stirred up more than her share of trouble with her outspoken views on elections, violence against women and inequality. We decided to celebrate this trailblazer with a new Monday Meme! As a leader herself, we thought this quote was appropriate. Happy birthday, Pat and keep giving them hell.

Amidst status updates about what folks had for lunch or who they’re voting for, something big is happening on Facebook in 2015. The company reports over 6 million people have come out on the social media site as LGBT including 800,000 over the past year. mipiace

Facebook released a statement on National Coming Out Day:

Over the past year, approximately 800,000 Americans updated their profile to express a same-gender attraction or custom gender. Further, not only has the total number of Americans who have come out on Facebook risen dramatically, but so has the number coming out each day. As the chart demonstrates, the number of people on Facebook coming out per day is on track to be three times what it was a year ago.

The company also notes that, “Additionally, in the days following the June 26 Supreme Court decision, we saw more than 26 million people display a rainbow filter on their profile picture.”

mishimo memeHappy Monday! Back in the early 20th century nice Japanese authors didn’t write about sex, political change and death. But Yukio Mishima did. Life for this gay provocateur wasn’t easy and he eventually died by ritual suicide at age 45. However, today Japan and the world over has recognized the man’s courage and talent.

Write a poem for someone you love in one of our cards!
