Earlier this week, NBA referee Bill Kennedy revealed he is gay. “I am proud to be an NBA referee and I am proud to be a gay man,” Kennedy told Yahoo Sports on Sunday night. “I am following in the footsteps of others who have self-identified in the hopes that will send a message to young men and women in sports that you must allow no one to make you feel ashamed of who you are.” Kennedy’s coming out comes on the heels of the explosive suspension of Sacramento Kings guard Rajon Rondo. Rondo unleashed a firestorm of anti-gay slurs directed towards Kennedy following his ejection from a game in Mexico City earlier this month. Kennedy along with two other referees heard Rondo’s tirade, leading to his league suspension announced last Friday.

The NBA has thrown their support behind Kennedy and denounced Rando’s behavior. NBA commissioner said in a statement, “”I wholeheartedly support Bill’s decision to live his life proudly and openly. Throughout his 18-year career with the league, Bill has excelled as a referee because of his passion, dedication and courage. Those qualities will continue to serve him well both as a game official and as a positive influence for others. While our league has made great progress, our work continues to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and dignity.”

Rajon Rondo is the third player suspended for using anti-gay slurs. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls center were both separately fined by the NBA during the 2011 season.

stein memeIn the era of bizarre headlines, terrifying tales from the campaign trail and downright depressing world news, keeping the words of Gertrude Stein in mind sounds like a great idea. Out, proud and take-no-prisoners, Stein is often remembered as the champion of great artists like Cezanne and Hemingway. But her own contributions to the worlds of art and literature are nothing to sneeze at. Stein essentially created queer fiction with Q.E.D. published in 1903 and raised eyebrows until her death at age 72 in 1946.

Raise some eyebrows of your own with our amazing selection of cards! Check them out here.

Cincinnati Becomes First City To Ban Conversion Therapy

Untitled(2)On Wednesday, the Cincinnati City Council voted to ban gay conversion therapy. According to Cincinnati.com,

In the end, council voted 7-2 to pass the law, which prohibits therapy designed to change sexual orientation or gender identity for minors, and imposes a $200-a-day fine on violators. Cincinnati follows four states – California, Oregon, Illinois and New Jersey – and the District of Columbia banning the therapy, becoming the first city outside of D.C. to do so.

The vote comes on the heels of the death of transgender teen Leela Alcorn, who committed suicide last December. In her powerful suicide note, Alcorn mentioned her own conversion therapy. “This is about saving the lives of LGBT people,” said Councilman Chris Seelbach, who led the effort to ban conversion therapy.  “She challenged us to make her death matter, and we’re doing just that,” Seelbach said.

Although you couldn’t sit down with Oprah and come out of the closet back in Willa Cather’s day, the iconic author didn’t exactly hide her relationships with women either. To this day, scholars quibble over if these relationships were indeed sexual. Nevertheless, Cather and Edith Lewis lived together in series of apartments from 1908 until the author’s death in 1947. Regardless of her sexual orientation, Cather had a unique vision into the human soul and wrote incredible works that stand up today. Today’s meme and the quote provided by Cather touches on her long-running themes of  inner strength and resiliency. cather meme

Louisiana’s New Governor To Outlaw LGBT Discrimination

Shockingly, it is still legal in the state of Louisiana to fire someone for being gay. Governor elect Jon Bel Edwards looks to change all of that.

John-Bel-Edwards-new-wiki__7.29730According to The Advocate, “‘The Times Picayune of New Orleans reports that sometime after his inauguration January 11, Edwards will sign an executive order to protect his state’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender state employees and government contractors from getting fired, being discriminated against and harassed.” No time frame for the executive order has been announced but the Times Picayune did note that the bill,”would not protect non government employees, nor would it necessarily apply to state government outside the governor’s control, such as the judiciary.”

This being the South, Edwards already faces opposition to the order as the Louisiana Family Forum has promised to fight the order.

Twain MemeGood old Mark Twain would be a spry 180 years old today and probably still spouting off incredible little chestnuts like the one featured in today’s meme. Twain had a way of cutting through life’s bs like a hot knife and could also be incredibly tender as shown in this meme. We chose this particular quote because a reminder of kindness is always a good thing especially during the holiday season. Twain died in April 1910 but his words and wisdom continue to make us laugh and think.

Top 4 Tips For Signing a Group Card

0316-Front-Web-2xlbvff754nmvt3a0glone“I don’t know what to sign!’ a friend of mine recently lamented as a card from a group of us was being passed around. This friend isn’t alone. Most of us tend to freeze up whenever the white envelope gets handed over or left on our desk. Should we be witty? Should we use this space to tell a story about the person? Should we just sign our name and be done with the whole tortuous affair? It shouldn’t be so hard and it doesn’t have to be with Proudly Yours Top 4 Card Signing Tips!

4. Keep it simple: Ever get that card with a person’s life story in it? Yikes. Don’t be that person. Funny and lengthy stories are best shared at happy hour or over coffee with the gang. And long declarations of admiration are maybe not greeting card-appropriate. Instead, keep it simple and to the point. Say, “Happy Birthday” or “All the best” or “We love you and we’ll miss you.” It doesn’t have to be Shakespeare to be special and unique.

3.Don’t be a space hog: We get it. You draw cute pictures or write witty poems but maybe leave some room for other people to sign too? Your message doesn’t have to be bigger or longer to leave an impact. Being conscious of the space left in the card is the polite thing to do.

2.Avoid being redundant: Take a look around elsewhere on the card. If everyone is saying “Good luck! We’ll miss you!” maybe try something else.  Something personal like, “I’ll miss our lunches together” or “Hope you love your new job.” An original message shows you actually care and you’re not just going through the card signing motions.

1. Be authentic: When signing a card to someone close or maybe someone you don’t know that well, be yourself. Write whatever it is you want to write but do it from the heart. Even in group cards you can still find the words (and the space) to say something lovely. A great quote, a funny one-liner you and the person share, a short memory are all ways to say you care while making signing the group card less stressful.

Pick up a great card right here!

ward meme

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up in a few days, we figured a Monday Meme focused around gratitude was probably a good idea. This one comes from that Texas-born quote factory William Arthur Ward. Ward wrote for dozens of magazines and newspapers and rose to acclaim in the 1950’s. He died in 1994 but lives on in a series of quotes that wind up everywhere and we thought this was a great one considering the season.

Lastly, it’s a nice time to remember what we’re personally grateful for and we’re grateful for you, lovely card buyers!
