In November, Washington state voters passed Referendum 47 which legalizes same sex marriage. As soon as the law went into effect on December 6th couples began collecting their long awaited marriage certificates with onlookers cheering them on with roses, coffee, kleenex and swag.
Only a few minutes after midnight Jane Abbott Lighty, 77, and Pete-e Petersen, 85, were the first same sex couple in Washington state’s history to receive a wedding license. As quoted in David Ferguson’s article on Rawstory, Lighty commented on the significance of the moment, “To have our 35 year loving relationship publicly honored and celebrated and have this be a legal marriage means everything to both of us.”
Congratulations to Jane and Pete-e and all of the other couples that can now legally celebrate their union!
